Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness admits that Matthijs de Ligt is likely to be sold this summer amid interest from Manchester United.

The Netherlands international, 24, has been heavily linked with the Red Devils this summer and it is thought that the club could yet try to sign him even after beating Real Madrid to the capture of Leny Yoro.

De Ligt is a player who is familiar with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag following their time together at Ajax and the player himself is thought to be keen on the idea of reuniting with his compatriot in the Premier League.

United are set to prioritise a defensive midfielder after signing Yoro but would like to sign another defender if they can raise additional funds through player trading. And interest in De Ligt could be rekindled at Hoeness effectively opened the door for him to be sold.

Man Utd make Manuel Ugarte U-turn as transfer reality bites in nightmare summer

The Bayern president discussed potential outgoing transfers with German media this weekend and said: "It's possible that a defender will leave. De Ligt is Dutch, the coach at Manchester United is Dutch… I would have no problem if he stays. Personally, I would not sell Upamecano."

Previous reports had indicated that United and Bayern were in talks over a potential deal for De Ligt before it emerged that Yoro, 18, was prepared to snub interest from Real Madrid in order to pursue a transfer to Old Trafford.

The talented teenager has been courted by several of Europe's elite since breaking into Lille's first-team and is widely regarded as one of the most promising defenders in world football.

While Yoro is likely to partner Lisandro Martinez in central defence, United could target another centre-back if they can offload Victor Lindelof. Ten Hag recently confirmed to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dadblad that talks over a deal for De Ligt were ongoing.

He said: “We still have to wait and see whether De Ligt will come. But the good thing is, during my vacation I was out of the process for three or four weeks. During that period it was really the club, the newly established scouting and recruitment department, that brought in these players.

“The fact that there are also Dutch players among them is actually a coincidence. Primarily these were players who were brought in by our organisation. But of course I support them, let that be clear – and we still make the choice together.”
