Chelsea and Atlético Madrid were said to be “close” to a full agreement over a possible Conor Gallagher transfer yesterday, and by tonight, it looks like the two clubs have indeed agreed on a potential €40m deal.
We say potential still because the final say remains with the player himself, and it’s not clear at all what Gallagher himself might want to do. (He obviously hasn’t said anything and rumors have been quite quiet in this regard.)
Chelsea’s briefing on this development included a revelation that we had apparently offered a new three-year deal to Gallagher back in June, which he did not accept. The briefing claims that those terms were “comparable” to the highest earners under our current wage structure, whatever that may mean. It’s unclear if these terms were any better than what we had offered previously.
So, as things stand, Gallagher can go to Atléti if he wants to. We’ll just have to wait and see if he does.
