Erik ten Hag has paid a classy tribute to Steve McClaren after the Manchester United coach decided to leave the club.
McClaren, 63, has decided to walk away from Old Trafford and become Jamaica's new manager just over two weeks before the new Premier League season. The former England boss worked as one of Ten Hag's two main assistants during his first couple of years at Old Trafford but had his role changed earlier this summer.
That's because Ten Hag has restructured his coaching staff, also waving goodbye to No2. Mitchell van der Gaag and forward coach Benni McCarthy. But the Dutchman, who previously worked alongside McClaren at Eredvisie side Twente, didn't plan on saying goodbye for good when the 63-year-old stayed at home rather than travelling for United's ongoing pre-season tour in the USA.
Instead, McClaren has been at Carrington working with players who featured at Euro 2024 and the Copa America. United noted that as Jamaica don't play again until September, McClaren won't leave the club until United's first-team have returned from the USA to link up with the rest of their team-mates.
In a statement confirming McClaren's departure, Ten Hag said: "I want to thank Steve for his tremendous service over the past two years.

"He has been an invaluable source of support and advice to me since I arrived in English football, helping us achieve two trophies while laying down foundations for further success.
"Steve and I have been friends for 16 years since we first worked together at FC Twente and that relationship will continue as he embarks on this next challenge, as will his bond with Manchester United. All of us at the club wish Steve the best of luck in his new role."
McClaren himself added: "I wish to say a huge thank you to everyone at Manchester United for their friendship, help and support during the past two years.

"I am delighted to have played my part in helping Erik deliver two trophies to the club and for my final game to have been our FA Cup victory over Manchester City, there can be no better note on which to end. I have no doubt the foundations that are in place at Manchester United will see the club challenging again soon for all the major trophies."
Ex-United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dutch coach Rene Hake and Swede Andreas Georgson will replace the trio of McClaren, Van der Gaag and McCarthy in an effort to help Ten Hag guide United back towards the top of European football.
