Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has rated Trent Alexander-Arnold highly for years, and so Los Blancos have put out feelers to the media for quite some time in order to show the Liverpool right back that they would welcome him with open arms.
There hasn’t been much urgency on the part of Real Madrid to go after Alexander-Arnold, though, because there has never been an opening…until now, with 2025 looming.
It’s a big year for Alexander-Arnold, because his contract with Liverpool is expiring. And a cycle has ended at Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp leaving the club. Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino already did the same in the previous two years.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid never needed a starting right back because of Dani Carvajal, even though fans wanted him replaced with Trent after the Spanish international started to decline in health and performances.
However, Carvajal came rearing back in a big way last season, playing so well for both Real Madrid and Spain as a Champion of Europe in both respects that he is now considered a legitimate Ballon d’Or candidate – a very rare feat for a right back.
As Carvajal nears 33, Real Madrid can begin to discuss his long-term replacement, and Trent Alexander-Arnold would be the best possible option, especially since he could be convinced to join for free next year.
If Alexander-Arnold cannot be coaxed to leave Liverpool, which produced him and where he is a true club legend, then Real Madrid could finally reunite with one of their own.
According to Diario AS, via Madrid Zone, PSG star Achraf Hakimi is a right back option Real Madrid are monitoring as a potential signing in 2026 when his own contract would expire.
Hakimi is a homegrown Real Madrid talent who was loaned to Borussia Dortmund for the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, with the intention of returning to the Santiago Bernabeu.
But Hakimi played so well for Dortmund that he felt ready to start over Carvajal. Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane were never going to make that move, because Hakimi didn’t have half of Carvajal’s Champions League experience or defensive pedigree.
Thus, Hakimi forced a move to Inter Milan, where he won Serie A immediately, and then he ended up moving to PSG to join forces with Kylian Mbappe, who became his closest friend.
All these years later, Hakimi has left the door open for a return to Real Madrid, and with Mbappe no longer binding him to the struggling club, a 2026 free transfer may become more appealing for the 25-year-old right back.
Signing a PSG player for free isn’t easy, though, as Real Madrid figured out with Mbappe, and the club’s unstable leadership’s reaction to Mbappe’s departure will likely lead to heightened animosity over a Hakimi transfer approach.
Still, there’s nothing PSG can materially do if Hakimi wants out and holds firm, but that whole saga would only be a topic for discussion if, the year prior, Real Madrid don’t land their ultimate target in Alexander-Arnold.
