The Danish international has chosen to move from his no.11 jersey.
Manchester United have confirmed Rasmus Hojlund will wear the no.9 shirt this season.
The Dane sported the no.11 jersey in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford but, following the departure of Anthony Martial, is set to take his vacated no.9.
Hojlund also wears the same number at international level and follows in a host of former United greats to have held that shirt. Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Dimitar Berbatov, Louis Saha and Andy Cole are among the club’s former no.9s in the Premier League era.
Hojlund, who scored scored 16 goals in an up-and-down first campaign in Manchester, returned to training earlier this week following his involvement in Euro 2024. The ex-Atalanta star started all four games for Denmark in Germany and, after a three-week break, was back at Carrington on Monday.
He’s also expected to be named in the club’s travelling squad to America on Wednesday and could be seen on the pitch in the no.9 shirt for the first time on Sunday when United take on Arsenal in Los Angeles. A beaming Hojlund was pictured with holding his new number on the club’s website.
His selection as no.9 could also been seen as a seal of approval following Joshua Zirkzee’s arrival from Bologna. The Dutchman will provide competition for starting berth up top, something that was lacking in the latter stages of last season due to Martial’s injury.
It’s understood Zirkzee will play as a central striker or in the wide areas this season. United are also monitoring Ivan Toney’s situation at Brentford, while youngster Ethan Wheatley is another option.
