Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town played out a friendly on Wednesday to keep fresh during the international break.

Both the Eagles and the Tractor Boys are still searching for a first win of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign – sitting 18th and 17th respectively as things stand.

Therefore, you can understand why Oliver Glasner and Kieran McKenna – who Crystal Palace held talks with in January – were keen to arrange a friendly to keep fitness levels high, and test out some new ideas as they search for that elusive victory.

Let’s take a look at what happened in Wednesday’s clash between Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town.

Oliver Glasner rests Adam Wharton and trials two new systems as Crystal Palace draw 2-2 against Ipswich Town

A story from London World now shares what happened in Wednesday’s friendly.

It is said that Glasner opted to leave Adam Wharton out completely as the England international continues to nurse a groin problem – while Chris Richards was also rested due to a hamstring injury.

London World state that several stars who are fit were involved – such as Eddie Nketiah and Joel Ward – although it was not revealed who scored our two goals.

Most interestingly – however – was the fact Glasner tested two new formations.

Sources inform London World that the Austrian tried a 4-3-3 system against Ipswich Town, and also a 4-1-4-1 shape, both of which we are yet to see him adopt in a competitive match since replacing Roy Hodgson in February.

Tactical changes could point to Daniel Munoz emergency plan for Crystal Palace

Intriguingly, both of these new formations move away from Glasner’s usual defence, which typically involves three central defenders and two wing-backs.

Incidentally, Daniel Munoz just suffered an injury in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Liverpool, a man who excels as a right wing-back and contributes heavily to our attacking play.

Academy star Caleb Kporha has been mentioned as a Munoz replacement, although the formations Glasner used against Ipswich Town may suggest that the 50-year-old plans to abandon wing-backs all together until the Colombia international regains full fitness.

As we know, Tyrick Mitchell is more than capable of playing as a traditional left-back, while a normal right-back role also suits the 33-year-old Nathaniel Clyne better at this stage of his career.

Whatever happens in our next competitive fixture – a Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest on Monday 21st October – it is good to see Glasner trying new things, as he aims to drag Crystal Palace out of this rut.
