Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag remains in limbo with the Old Trafford decision-makers as the October international break heads towards the weekend.

Following the goalless draw with Aston Villa on Sunday, MEN Sport understands United lined up Thomas Tuchel as a potential replacement for Ten Hag. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co. then attended two meetings one on Monday at Old Trafford and another in London on Tuesday where the topic of the first-team's performance was discussed.

Since then though, no official statement either to confirm or deny Ten Hag's departure has been forthcoming, meaning his future remains in limbo. The Manchester Evening News has taken a look at the latest news surrounding the manager's future here.

Why are Ineos silent?

The MEN's chief United correspondent Samuel Luckhurst has reported on Thursday morning that Ineos did not intend to communicate any results from the meetings held earlier this week. This means the general assumption is now that Ten Hag will be attending the pre-Brentford press conference next week as well as leading the team at Old Trafford on Saturday.

It appears that the silence from Ineos would suggest that they are not one hundred per cent confident that Ten Hag is the long-term future of the club. Especially, after Ratcliffe failed to back the United boss publicly last week.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's stance

On Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Everton chief Keith Wyness claimed he heard from a lot of 'United sources' that failure to win at Villa last weekend was going to spell the end for Ten Hag. However, it is unclear whether the draw in the West Midlands was enough to earn him a stay of execution or not.

However, Wyness did add that Ten Hag's 'vociferous' response to the point may have done enough to keep him in power.

New hire close

Meanwhile, it is believed that United are close to appointing PSG revenue officer Marc Armstrong. L’Equipe reported in September that the French club's executive was at the top of Ineos' wishlist as they continue to look at ways to improve their boardroom.

It is believed that while no official announcement on Armstrong has been made, a move could be imminent now that Victoriano Melero has been appointed PSG's CEO. In his opening address, he heralded a 'new era' at the French giants which could hint at plenty of chopping and changing to come in Paris.
