Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could be returning to watch his old team sooner than many anticipated after news broke of his shock new job in football. The German has announced that he will be joining the Red Bull group at the beginning of next year as their global head of football.

This position will entail Klopp overseeing the teams owned by the energy drinks giant and ensuring results follow on the pitch. Among the European clubs owned by Red Bull are Leipzig and Salzburg.

Both clubs are currently competing in the Champions League with Leipzig - from Germany - set to face Liverpool on Wednesday, October 23. Arne Slot's side will travel to Germany for the fixture as they aim to continue their 100 per cent record in the marquee - and revamped - European competition.

While Klopp will not be officially working for Leipzig when the Reds visit his homeland, the 57-year-old might well deem it to be an ideal time to observe one of the clubs he will be responsible for, as well as reacquainting himself with old friends from the Liverpool camp. Klopp has refrained from visiting Anfield in the opening months of Slot's era in a bid not to overshadow the new man at the helm.

Klopp did return to Anfield in the summer to watch Taylor Swift in concert, but his return to football had not been on the cards at that juncture. Speaking after being announced as joining Red Bull, Klopp said: "After almost 25 years on the side-lines, I couldn't be more excited to get involved in a project like this.

"The role might have changed, but my passion for football and the people who make the game what it is has not. By joining Red Bull at a global level, I want to develop, improve and support the incredible football talent that we have at our disposal.

"There are many ways that we can do this by using the elite knowledge and experience that Red Bull possesses to learning from other sports and other industries. Together we can discover what is possible."
