Manchester United enjoyed a busy summer transfer window but potential signings for January are already emerging.

The international break is always a tough time for any under-pressure manager.

This is when changes are often made in the dugout and Erik ten Hag finds himself in danger of losing his job.

Manchester United simply haven’t been good enough this season and sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Ineos have been meeting this week to discuss Ten Hag’s future, just over a month since a busy summer transfer window came to an end.

United backed Ten Hag with five first-team signings but some may already be hoping for additions in January to help this struggling squad.

Manchester United want League One talent

January spending hasn’t been too common at Old Trafford in recent times but a new goalkeeper seems to be on the radar.

Andre Onana is not under any kind of threat right now and has actually been picked out as a rare bright spot this season by Rio Ferdinand.

MORE UNITED STORIES

United seem to be looking at homegrown options behind Onana though amid question marks over the long-term future of Altay Bayindir.

The Turkish stopper has barely featured since signing from Fenerbahce in 2023 and may want first-team action elsewhere.

United have already been linked with Anthony Patterson from Sunderland but could look elsewhere for an English stopper.

TEAMtalk report that United have now joined the race to sign Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle.

Arsenal are interested in Tickle too and actually considered signing him to replace Aaron Ramsdale in August.

The Gunners are still keeping tabs on Tickle but United are now joining the race for his signature.

Who is Manchester United target Sam Tickle?

Tickle hails from Warrington and started out in the Wigan Athletic career before being let go as a 16-year-old.

Tickle started playing non-league football with Pilkington and his performances ultimately tempted Wigan into bringing him back after just a year away.

After loan spells with Nantwich Town and Warrington Rylands, Tickle was handed a league debut on the final day of the 2022-23 season.

Tickle was a mainstay for Wigan last season, racking up more than 50 appearances in all competitions whilst earning a first England Under-21 cap.

The 22-year-old won the Player of the Year award at Wigan last season and has been hailed as a ‘special talent’ by Latics boss Shaun Maloney.

United would allow Tickle to remain local but Bayindir’s lack of first-team action may yet scare off goalkeeping targets from joining United moving forward.
