With Txiki Begiristain reportedly set to leave Manchester City in 2025, whether Pep Guardiola will follow in his footsteps is a question worth pondering over.

Guardiola is yet to extend his contract at City, which also expires when Begiristain is expected to depart the club.

Hugo Viana is the favourite to replace Txiki Begiristain — which is the mark of significant change at Manchester City.

Much like Pep Guardiola, his countryman has also spent several years at the Etihad Stadium.

The pair have closely worked in tandem for several years to ensure City turn into the juggernaut they are known to be nowadays.

Whether the £378,846-a-week manager is considering his future at the club after Txiki Begiristain’s reported decision to leave Manchester City would be an interesting development to witness.

Guardiola future plans revealed after Begiristain exit

If Pep Guardiola had even decided to extend his contract at City, it would have been safe to presume that his dream scenario would have been to continue working with his trusted colleague.

Guardiola and Begiristain are one of the best manager-sporting director duos in football.

At both Manchester City and Barcelona, they have conjured a winning formula while working together.

But it seems like the summer of 2025 will lead to wholesale changes at City.

The potential arrival of Hugo Viana or any other sporting director could mean the entire recruitment policy at the club undergoes a major shift.

City supporters will have to be open to such changes after being accustomed to Begiristain’s methods.

However, The Telegraph have reported Txiki Begiristain’s reported decision to bid farewell to Manchester City at the end of the 2024/2025 season has no bearing on Pep Guardiola’s future.

Furthermore, it has been claimed that Guardiola has been aware of Begiristain’s decision for a while.

The 60-year-old’s decision to leave City is also not believed to be linked to the 115 financial charges that the club are facing.

Man City still have Pep Guardiola hope despite Txiki Begiristain news

Manchester City will be delighted to know that Pep Guardiola will not decide his future based on Txiki Begiristain’s decision to leave the club next year.

If Guardiola had decided to follow suit after Begiristain, the decision-makers at City may have been resigned to the fact that the ongoing season will be his final one at the club.

But now, the Sky Blues still have hope in keeping the Catalan tactician at the club for longer.

The higher-ups at Manchester City will be aware of how important it is for them to sign an elite sporting director to ensure Pep Guardiola is open to extending his contract.

While Txiki Begiristain has raised the bar for other directors of sport across world football, his successor must be similarly connected within the game while also having an expertise in spotting talent.

Otherwise, Manchester City could risk Pep Guardiola privately feeling that the structure at the club is no longer of a standard where he believes he can continue to accrue success.
