Thomas Tuchel has emerged as one of the top candidates to replace Erik ten Hag if he is sacked as Manchester United manager.

Manchester United chiefs attended a meeting in London on Tuesday where they are expected to discuss the future of Erik ten Hag after the poor start to the season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave Ten Hag two games to turn things around but it is yet to be seen whether back-to-back draws against Porto and Aston Villa were enough to save his job.

With club football currently on pause for the October international break, Ratcliffe and Ineos may view it as the ideal time to make a change.

There are as many as 10 potential Ten Hag replacements who could be considered by Ineos, but former Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel has emerged as a favourite.

Thomas Tuchel could revive Mason Mount at Man United

Ratcliffe is a big admirer of Tuchel, and the German was interviewed for the United job in the summer before Ineos put their faith in Ten Hag with a one-year contract extension.

Tuchel came very close to the United job over the summer after discussing the financials of a potential deal.

If the hierarchy decide during their meeting that it is time for a change, Tuchel will be at the front of the queue, and that could be great news for Mason Mount.

MORE UNITED STORIES

Mount made a £55m move to Old Trafford in 2023 but has failed to live up to expectations so far under Ten Hag.

Mount’s injury record has stopped him from putting together a run of games, but even when he has played he has failed to make an impact.

But history suggests that Tuchel could get the best out of Mount – he certainly did at Chelsea.

In fact, Mount enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career under Tuchel at Chelsea. Under the German, Mount scored 19 goals and made 19 assists.

He has only scored more goals (22) under Frank Lampard, but he also made an extra 40 appearances under the ex-England international.

In contrast, Mount has only scored one goal and registered one assist in 25 games under Ten Hag.

Thomas Tuchel is bad news for two Man United stars

While rumours of Tuchel becoming Manchester United boss may put a smile on Mount’s face, it spells bad news for two of his teammates.

It will be a concern for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, who joined the Red Devils from Bayern Munich this summer in a £50m double deal.

Both signings cited Ten Hag as a big reason behind their move to Old Trafford, but the Dutchman could soon be replaced by their former Bayern boss.

Neither player played their best football under Tuchel, with Mazraoui struggling for game time under the German at Bayern.
