Paul Scholes admits opposition players facing Liverpool were left intimidated by the 'This is Anfield' sign, as he revealed rivals "don't really want to look" at it. The Manchester United legend was discussing the most intimidating tunnels he'd been in alongside former team-mate Nicky Butt on their podcast, Football's Greatest.

When asked by Butt what was the most intense tunnel he'd ever walk out of, Scholes named Liverpool and specifically mentioned the This is Anfield sign as the source of intimidation.

"I think the Liverpool tunnel was not intimidating but one that you felt was intense, This Is Anfield sign, they're all touching the sign on the way down," the former England and United midfielder said.

"You don't really want to look at the sign, you go down them steps and everything's tight, you almost have to go in behind each other."

Scholes experienced plenty of battles against Liverpool across his 20-year career at Old Trafford, and the 49-year-old was particularly complimentary of what he's seen from the Reds this season.

Currently sat top of the Premier League table after seven games in Arne Slot's first season in charge, Liverpool have coped well since Jurgen Klopp's departure. While appearing alongside Jamie Carragher on the Fan Debate, from the Overlap, Scholes admitted he thinks Liverpool have more chance of dethroning Manchester City and winning the title than Arsenal.

When responding to Liverpool fan Chloe Buxom's claim that Mikel Arteta's side will never have a better opportunity to clinch the title after going 20 years without finishing top, Scholes said: "You don't think you've got a chance? I think you're better than Arsenal.

"You've got a better squad, and possibly team. They excite me more. It's not nice saying that, but honestly Liverpool do excite me more when I watch them, when I see their players.

"Everything they've got, it feels better than Arsenal. I think Pep could be more worried about Liverpool than he is Arsenal."

As Liverpool fly high, Scholes has been forced to endure a horror campaign watching United, who languish in 14th after claiming just eight points in seven games.

The points tally is the lowest United have ever racked up in the first seven games of a Premier League season, with pressure continuing to mount on Erik ten Hag's position as manager.
