A new target has emerged as Newcastle United search for a winger to join Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in attack.

The Magpies have taken their search to Italy, which is also where they are trying to recruit a centre-back from as Newcastle aim to spend their £100million transfer budget.

AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw is Newcastle’s top defensive target, with the club back in contact with his agent after being linked earlier in the summer.

The 22-year-old would be an outstanding addition to Eddie Howe’s squad, as would a player who Thiaw has come up against in Serie A.

Newcastle make bid for Fiorentina star

Newcastle United are also in the market for a right winger, although a lot of their targets have been way too ambitious.

The Magpies wanted Michael Olise, but he has gone to Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Jarrod Bowen to Newcastle is a non-starter.

Howe’s side have been linked with some exciting players, but ones that always felt unattainable.

Now Fiorentina star Nicolas Gonzalez is on Newcastle’s radar, with an offer already tabled for the 26-year-old.

That is according to La Nazione, who report that Newcastle have submitted a bid to sign Gonzalez from Fiorentina.

They report that the offer was made through intermediaries a few days ago, and will likely not be enough to convince the Florence based side to sell. La Nazione add that they do not know how much Newcastle offered, but believe it is less than the £36million that Brentford proposed to sign Gonzalez last year.

Gonzalez is a goal scorer and a champion

Gonzalez is yet to report for pre-season with Fiorentina, as he is on the back of a very exciting summer.

He made five appearances as Argentina won the Copa America – a competition that Bruno Guimaraes and Brazil only reached the quarter finals of.

Gonzalez’s stock is extremely high, and he is also on the back of an impressive domestic season in Italy. He scored 16 goals in all competitions last season, which is more than any of Newcastle’s wingers managed. In comparison, Gordon scored 12, while Miguel Almiron only got five.

Miggy, who Newcastle could sell, is the player who Gonzalez would replace, but it remains to be seen if Toon officials will return with a bigger offer. Their current proposal will not be enough, as the Magpies continue their quest to make their first real splash in the 2024 summer transfer market.

Could Gonzalez be Paul Mitchell’s marquee summer signing? He certainly fits the bill. Newcastle want a left-footed right winger who can provide goals, and that is exactly what Gonzalez does. He can also play on the left or through the middle, offering Howe the versatility he craves.

It is early days, but this is a very exciting rumour for the Toon Army.
