Manchester United have reportedly missed out on some of the transfer fee that they’ve earned from Marseille for Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood completed a move to the French side last week, with United having agreed to a £26.6 million fee. However, just over £5 million of that money will now go to Getafe.

According to The Times, as part of the loan agreement between United and Getafe last season, a 20 percent sell-on clause to the Spanish club was inserted, as well as a further 20 percent of any future earnings that United make on the forward.

Having impressed during his loan spell in La Liga, Getafe now get the benefit of United’s sale by earning just over £5 million due to the clause, leaving United with a fee of just over £20 million from the sale. The Spanish side could benefit further in the future too, with United inserting a sell-on clause of their own in the agreement with Marseille; any further money United make from that, Getafe will receive 20 percent.

Greenwood moved to La Liga on loan after being arrested and charged with attempted rape and controlling and coercive behaviour in January 2022. He denied the allegations, and all charges were later dropped.

In 36 appearances in all competitions for Getafe, Greenwood scored 10 times and provided a further six assists. The club was keen to make the move permanent this summer but was unable to complete a deal.

Greenwood could make a return to England when Marseille take on Sunderland at Valley Parade in Bradford on August 3. That game comes 15 days before he could make his competitive debut for the club away at Brest on August 18.
