Sheffield Wednesday have seen Shea Charles make a fantastic start to life on loan from Premier League side Southampton.

Sheffield Wednesday were able to strike a loan deal for midfielder Charles in the latter stages of the summer transfer window, bringing him in from Southampton.

The Northern Irish starlet put in some solid performances for the Saints as they won promotion to the Premier League and has dropped back into the Championship to find regular game time.

He’s got just that with the Owls, starting all six second-tier games since joining. He bagged his first senior goal at the weekend too, salvaging a late win for Danny Rohl’s side away at Coventry City.

Such form has prompted the inevitable questions of a January recall from his Sheffield Wednesday loan, despite being so early into the season. Rohl didn’t give the most reassuring of answers, saying:

“Hopefully we can keep him the whole season – you never know what happens if he performs in this direction.”

As such, for the sake of security and contingency planning, the Owls would be wise to keep some potential replacements in mind. Here, we put forward three defensive midfielders Sheffield Wednesday should consider…

To maintain a balanced midfield, Leicester City man Choudhury could be one worth keeping in mind.

The 27-year-old is struggling for minutes in the Premier League but his combative play style in the middle of the park could provide some real steel alongside Barry Bannan if Charles was to be recalled.

He’s perhaps not as able in possession as the current loan star but that side of his game did develop under Enzo Maresca last season. He has valuable Premier League and Championship experience and could be a feasible signing.

Tyler Morton – Liverpool

Questions may be asked over the physicality a midfield pairing of Bannan and Morton would offer but on the ball, Sheffield Wednesday would have two players capable of really dictating the game.

Morton has impressed in two Championship loans with Hull City and Blackburn Rovers so a return may not be on his radar. Premier League opportunities continue to elude him though and amid a lack of minutes over the early stages of the season, game time could be important in 2025.

Last but not least is a familiar face in Luongo, who has dropped down the Ipswich Town pecking order since their promotion to the Premier League.

The Australian is an all-action presence in the middle of the park and could cover the hard yards alongside Bannan. A winter move doesn’t seem out of the question given the midfield options on the books at Portman Road either.

Luongo could be an asset for Sheffield Wednesday again, even on a short-term loan.
