Real Madrid begin the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. Las Blancas travel to London to play against Chelsea, whom they’ve already faced in the past two UWCL campaigns.
This will be the fifth encounter between the two teams, where the white club will be looking for their first-ever win after two draws and two losses against the Blues. While Real Madrid have already played and won all their 7 matches this season, Chelsea have played two matches, winning against Aston Villa (1-0) and Crystal Palace (0-7). The London team didn’t play this weekend as their match against Manchester United scheduled for Sunday, October 6th, was postponed.
There’s good news and bad news in the squad list available for Alberto Toril. Antonia Silva is on the squad list for the first time, as she missed the start of the season and the entire preseason as well. The Brazilian defender got injured in the last matchday of the group stage in the Olympics this summer. On the other hand, Sandie Toletti injured her knee in the match against Valencia. The club hasn’t put up any official announcement, but the reported rumor by Diario AS is that she has suffered an external lateral ligament tear in her right knee. The French midfielder won’t require an intervention but is assumed she will be unavailable for a couple of months.
“I know the players really well. They had a few good signings, for instance, Lucy Bronze will help the team a lot, especially in the Champions League with her experience. But we have an amazing squad as well, we have talented and young players,” said Melanie Leupolz in the pre-match press conference ahead of the first group stage match.
The kickoff is on Tuesday, October 8th at 21:00 CEST (20:00 Local time) at Stamford Bridge, London. The broadcast will be available on DAZN.
