With how much time Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has spent in England, it is natural that he has been linked with taking over the national team’s job.
Guardiola has also worked with several current England internationals at City — such as Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Rico Lewis and Kalvin Phillips.
In July, the FA’s dream of appointing Pep Guardiola came to light as it was stated that they were willing to give Lee Carsley the job on an interim basis until the summer of 2025 when his contract at Manchester City expires.
Back in 2017, Pep Guardiola ruled himself out for the England job — emphasising that in his view, an Englishman should manage the Three Lions — as should every nation’s native manager.
The Manchester City legend is a serial winner, remains one of the best in the business and has the experience and tactical nous to lead England to glory at an international tournament.
Alan Pardew named Guardiola as his dream candidate for the Three Lions job — a sentiment perhaps many supporters of the England national team hold.

Rooney shares his thoughts on Guardiola managing England
While Gary Lineker was also keen on Pep Guardiola managing England, he doubted the move would come to fruition.
The chances of Pep Guardiola becoming the next England boss were considered “remote” as per a report in May — with the FA claimed not to be able to afford his annual £20 million salary.
If the FA do intend not to appoint Lee Carsley on a full-time basis, they will be hoping the manager they do end up hiring can deliver a trophy at a major tournament.
England certainly have the talent pool that can be considered ready to win a tournament.
Considering Gareth Southgate took them to back-to-back European Championship finals indicates that this Three Lions side has the quality to compete amongst the very best.
However, Southgate’s tenure ended in tears as the nation’s wait for a major international trophy since their famous World Cup triumph in 1966 continues.
But Wayne Rooney feels the FA will willfully choose not to bring in Pep Guardiola to manage England.
Rooney told talkSPORT: “I think the big thing with the FA over the last 10 years is they’ve built the pathway for these young players and it’s been a lot of work put into it so I’d be very surprised if someone like a Pep or Klopp or whoever or one of these big-name managers comes in because they’d want it their own way.”
“I think what the FA have done, that’s the reason Gareth was appointed who the FA can control a little bit and control everything that happens underneath the first-team.”
“I get the impression that if a big-name manager comes in then that goes out of the window.”
Seems unlikely Pep Guardiola will manage England in any case
Even if Wayne Rooney’s theory is indeed true, it does not look like Pep Guardiola is interested in the England job anyway.
The £378,846-a-week man completed rejected any future opportunities to manage the Three Lions seven years ago anyway.
Furthermore, Guardiola has every reason to be happy with life at Manchester City.
City have won four Premier League titles on the bounce and Guardiola is in an environment where he could continue to make his history anyway.
However, it would be absurd if the FA were against the idea of managing Pep Guardiola.
If Rooney’s suggestion is deemed true, several English supporters would likely be gutted.
