Saturday night’s clash with Everton was an absolute disaster for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon.

While a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park was not the worst result in the world, it should have been so much more for Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s side had plenty of chances to win the game, but were toothless in attack. Newcastle United struggled without Alexander Isak, who continues to be out of action due to a toe injury.

In his absence, Anthony Gordon played up front, and he passed up Newcastle’s best chance against Everton.

The former Toffee had the chance to score his first ever goal against his former club, with Newcastle receiving a penalty in the 35th minute. The 23-year-old stepped up, only for Jordan Pickford to save Gordon’s effort.

In truth, it was a poor penalty, and Gordon has taken responsibility for Newcastle failing to win on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon is mocked after missing penalty against Everton

Unsurprisingly, the Everton fans went wild after Pickford saved Gordon’s penalty.

He was once again the subject of boos at Goodison Park, while Everton’s social media team has made the most of their former player’s miss from 12 yards following the 0-0 draw.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

A video they posted on X has angered Jamie Carragher, who criticised Everton for their reaction to Gordon’s penalty woes.

In response to a video on X, Carragher posted: “Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on & off the pitch & who you then sold for 40M. The Peoples club!”

What Anthony Gordon recently said about taking penalties

Everton will argue that it is just a bit of banter, while their amusement over Gordon’s penalty woes will only grow louder when they see what the England international said about scoring from 12 yards earlier this year during an interview with Gary Neville.

Gordon was asked to name who would take a last-minute penalty to save his life, and he chose himself.

“Me,” he said.

“I’m putting my life in no one else’s hands. No way. I’m a very good penalty taker. I don’t get to take many because we’ve got Alex , who can’t miss. But I’m good at pens.”

While Gordon proved that to be the case during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City, it was a very different story on his latest return to Goodison Park.

Newcastle United attacker can have the last laugh over Everton

Right now, everyone associated with Everton is laughing at Gordon. He will no doubt have been devastated to miss his penalty, and to do it against his former club, with the way he left, must have been agonising.

But Gordon will look towards the future, and there will be a chance for him to get the last laugh against the Toffees.

Newcastle United still need to play Everton at St James’ Park, with the two sides set to meet on Tyneside in the final game of the season.

That could end up being an absolutely massive game for Sean Dyche’s side, with Everton very much in the relegation conversation once again this season.

And if their safety is still in doubt when they arrive in the North East on May 25th 2025, Everton fans will be praying that their mocking of Gordon does not come back to bite them in the worst way imaginable.
