Wolves fans are still seething after the performance against Brentford – and one player has admitted it was his worst showing ever for the Old Gold.

Wolves remain bottom of the Premier League table after the 5-3 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Gary O’Neil’s side were again undone by their own poor defending, and simply gave themselves far too much to do.

There were some unsavoury scenes at the end as O’Neil and the players tried to acknowledge the fans. Some Wolves supporters chanted for Fosun to go, and many reacted angrily towards Rayan Ait-Nouri who had attempted to applaud those that made the trip down.

It was a terrible day at the office and for captain Mario Lemina, it was truly an afternoon to forget.

It has been a tough start to the new season for Lemina after he assumed the captain’s armband following the sale of Max Kilman early in the summer.

The 30-year-old just hasn’t been able to hit the same heights he did last term, with the armband appearing to weigh heavy.

In his own eyes, his performance at the Gtech was actually his worst since signing for Wolves in January 2023.

He admitted to the E&S: “It was my worst performance as a Wolves player.

“But what do we do? Do we just give up? No chance.

“Our fans were with us until the end of the game and we are really disappointed. We wanted to win this game but it didn’t go well.”

Lemina also backed O’Neil, insisting that he has given the players a lot since his arrival and that he is not the reason for the current situation.

Lemina could be dropped for Wolves soon

Lemina will be the first to say that his performances have not been up to par this season.

The Gabon international has been a terrific signing for Wolves since joining from Nice for just under £10 million in January 2023.

But Lemina hasn’t had the same influence so far this season. Wolves fans did not hold back on Lemina after the Brentford defeat.

It could be that the pressure of being captain has had an effect. We all saw the way Lemina reacted after Wolves lost to Aston Villa a couple of weeks ago.

It can also be argued that O’Neil has played Lemina out of position at times, which hasn’t helped.

We are now potentially looking at a situation that would have been unthinkable only months ago, and that’s him being dropped to the bench.

Lemina’s poor form might just prompt O’Neil to reassess things. The manager has a very good midfielder sat on his bench right now in Tommy Doyle who is itching for a chance, and Lemina making way for the Englishman may not be out of the question.

O’Neil admitted recently that Doyle thinks he should be starting for Wolves, and frankly, it’s becoming difficult to argue against that now.
