Tottenham came close to qualifying for the Champions League in Ange Postecoglou’s first season at the helm, and in order to get over the hump, Spurs know they need to overhaul their midfield.
This weekend in the third-place game and final of Copa America 2024, two Tottenham midfielders impressed, albeit players in very different situations at the club.
The first was Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who was the best player on the pitch as his team took down Canada to win third place at the tournament.
Then, on Sunday night, it was substitute Giovani Lo Celso’s turn to shine, as he has a beautiful flicked assist into the path of Inter Milan star striker – and Ballon d’Or contender – Lautaro Martinez to score the winning goal for Argentina over Colombia.
Lo Celso is, as with Argentina, a mere role player for Tottenham despite being one of the most talented technical midfielders in world football, as he showed in the past for Real Betis in LaLiga.
That technical ability was on display with the winning assist for Lautaro, and it is the ability that has made Lo Celso a transfer target for Barcelona and Aston Villa on the rumor mill.
But those teams haven’t exactly been driving hard after the 28-year-old, who is no longer anything remotely resembling a prospect in the grand scheme of world football.
With that classy and decisive assist off the bench, though, Lo Celso offered a glimpse of what he can do to change games at even a moment’s notice.
That’s the perfect audition for a future employer and a real boost for Tottenham to parlay Lo Celso’s big moment for his country into a transfer sale that helps Tottenham sign a younger, pure No. 8 to boost their center midfield.
Let’s see if other clubs besides Unai Emery’s Aston Villa begin to show serious interest in Lo Celso, whose style of play has always been suitable to many leagues – but especially LaLiga.
