Everton were never going to get away with James Tarkowski’s foul for Newcastle United’s penalty at Goodison Park, according to Dermot Gallagher.
The former Premier League official said with VAR in operation, there was no chance Tarkowski would escape after hauling Sandro Tonali to the ground.
Former Toffees product and villain of the home crowd, Anthony Gordon, then saw his consequent spot-kick saved by his England teammate Jordan Pickford.
“I don’t think even you could talk Tarkowski out of this, I think you’d really struggle,” Gallagher told presenter Rob Wotton live on Sky Sports .
“If you wrestle someone to the ground like this, VAR picks that up. I’ve said many times, you can’t un-see that, Rob – even you can’t un-see this. Would you like to give up?”
Everton conceded penalty, but didn’t get their own v Newcastle
It was a tale of two penalties at Goodison Park, except one was not given – and Gallagher believed the decision to have been correct after the coming-together between Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dan Burn.
He defended referee Craig Pawson over the conclusion that it had in fact been Calvert-Lewin who kicked Burn, and not the other way round – preventing the Toffees striker from attempting a second strike at Nick Pope’s goal.
It certainly wasn’t a bore draw despite the goalless scoreline, and Sean Dyche’s team will take the positives from the encounter in which the visitors dominated lengthy spells of possession and passed up golden chances.

Tarkowski may not have got away without a penalty being awarded, but with Pickford having bailed him out with the smart stop, the centre-half will be on guard not to be so reckless in the penalty area when defending set-piece routines.
A trip down to Ipswich Town comes after the international break for Dyche’s men, who now sit a place above the Tractor Boys in 16th.
