Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has praised the process carried out by Rob Jones when choosing not to send off Marcus Rashford during Aston Villa's 0-0 draw with Manchester United. He also believes nobody would have wished to see a penalty given against Morgan Rogers in the first half.

Villa were unable to return to winning ways in the Premier League before the international break, being held to a second successive draw with Man United after last week's stalemate with Ipswich Town. Both teams had their share attempts of attempts on goal but ultimately it was defences that came out on top.

A number of flashpoints could have also helped either break the deadlock, though decisions fed into the eventual goalless scoreline. One of those that went in the visitors' favour was Rashford remaining on the field when pundits such as Jamie Carragher to say the England forward got 'lucky'.

"If he gets sent off I don’t think he can argue too much," Gallagher agreed on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, though gave fair reason why the second yellow card was not brandished. He added: "But Dalot comes and sweeps the ball up so the argument is that he’s not breaking a promising attack."

What's more, Gallagher issued praise to on-field official Jones for providing clear warning in rushing for the card in his pocket. Ultimately Man United heeded this as under-pressure Erik ten Hag immediately withdrew the player.

"If he’s not going to send him off I do like what he did, he’s teed him up, the referee’s called him over, called Bruno Fernandes over and said ‘the next one he goes’. I think that’s good policy, so if he decides it’s not enough to send him off he’s made it clear the next one he’s going.

"I think he get’s a little bit lucky because the ball is running out. If you look you clearly see he dangles out a leg, is it a yellow card? Quite possibly, but Dalot is so close. We saw it last week with the Arsenal player, Partey, and with Will Hughes earlier in the season. That is the policy they have adopted. If he is not going to send him off, I do like what he has done."

Midway through the contest's first half, VAR had sided with Villa as their opponents argued Rogers' outstretched hand had blocked Harry Maguire's header into the penalty area, and therefore a penalty kick should have been awarded.

Gallagher responded: "Do you really, really ever want to see a penalty given for that? The answer is obviously no. I would also say is he even in the penalty area? I didn’t think at the time, and it was checked because of the location. He’s got his back to the ball, he’s so close, the ball’s headed against him so play on."
