Newcastle United’s centre-back search fell short during the summer transfer window.
While the Magpies brought in Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth, they also wanted to sign a right-sided centre-back.
Marc Guehi was Eddie Howe’s top target, with Newcastle United trying their best to sign the Crystal Palace defender.
However, Paul Mitchell could not agree a deal with Steve Parish, which resulted in Guehi remaining at Selhurst Park.
That was a devastating blow, but Guehi was not the first centre-back that Newcastle United tried to sign during the summer of 2024.
Newcastle tried to sign Jarell Quansah from Liverpool

Before the Guehi approach, Newcastle tried to sign Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer from Fulham.
Newcastle were confident they were going to sign Tosin, only for him to join Chelsea instead.
That scuppered the Magpies’ plans, who then tried to be opportunistic as they scrambled to salvage their PSR situation.

Things were so desperate at St James’ Park that Newcastle offered Liverpool the chance to sign Anthony Gordon.
However, Newcastle wanted a player in return, and asked Liverpool about signing Jarell Quansah on the back of his breakout season at Anfield.
Newcastle’s request was turned down by Liverpool, who had no intentions of letting the ‘faultless‘ centre-back depart.
Quansah set for new contract after Newcastle interest
Eddie Howe’s side missed out on the chance to sign Quansah, with the Reds determined to keep a young prospect who showed so much promise last season.
The 21-year-old was considered not for sale, which is a testament to how much potential Liverpool think he has.
Now Liverpool are preparing to make a fresh commitment to Quansah after rebuffing Newcastle’s attempt to sign him.
According to the Times, Quansah is now close to signing a new long-term contract with Liverpool. They add that the new deal will reflect Quansah’s progress on Merseyside, having made his Liverpool debut last season. Interestingly, that came at St James’ Park last August when the Reds came from a goal behind to win 2-1 despite being down to 10 men.
What Newcastle are likely to do when the January transfer window opens
Newcastle’s attempt to sign Quansah was merely opportunistic. It was a reflection of the PSR situation they found themselves in, as they scrambled to comply and avoid a points deduction.
But Liverpool said no to Newcastle’s proposal, and this new contract for Quansah should keep him at Anfield for the foreseeable future.
As for Newcastle, their centre-back search continues, and they could revisit a former target in January.
It has been reported that Newcastle will likely try to sign Guehi again, with £50millon potentially enough to do a deal.
