Manchester United is a difficult club to succeed at. Just at the circumstances surround the Aston Villa game on Sunday.

Manchester United’s visit to Aston Villa was billed as an execution for manager Erik ten Hag. The world’s media was waiting for a capitulation, focused on what may happen next.

The players and manager deserve credit for turning in a big performance under the intense scrutiny, with Ineos’ top team and even Sir Alex Ferguson in attendance too.

Away from Manchester United, life is a lot more calm and serene. Which is why you often find players thrive at new clubs.

David de Gea delivers for Fiorentina

Manchester United’s penalty shootout loss to Villarreal in 2021 will forever be one of the most painful defeats experienced.

David de Gea managed to concede 11 penalties, and then saw his own one saved, with United missing out on the Europa League.

Since then, David de Gea has rediscovered his penalty saving touch. United saw it in a Premier League game away at West Ham, while his new club Fiorentina saw it early too.

Now it’s getting beyond a joke. David de Gea saved two penalties in one game as Fiorentina beat AC Milan 2-1.

De Gea saved one in each half from Theo Hernandez and Tammy Abraham, becoming an instant hero in his best game for Fiorentina so far.

The Spaniard put a message out on Instagram after the game, still referencing his lengthy spell at Old Trafford.

He wrote: “Started in Spain, made in Manchester, loving it in Italy.”

Scott McTominay praises David de Gea

David de Gea is not the only former Manchester United star loving life in Italy. You can add Scott McTominay to the list.

McTominay signed for Napoli on transfer deadline day and he is becoming a key player for the Serie A leaders.

The Scotland international paid attention to De Gea’s heroics, responding on Instagram: “you are too good brother”, while Alejandro Garnacho and even Federico Macheda reached out.

Scott McTominay has had a strong start for Napoli, scoring two goals and providing one assist in his last three matches.

It will be a little while before McTominay and De Gea do battle. Fiorentina and Napoli are scheduled to face each other in late January, and then in May.
