The latest Everton news as the academy graduate returned to Goodison Park with Newcastle on Saturday but missed a crucial penalty in the 0-0 draw.

Former Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has sent a message of support to former teammate Anthony Gordon following his penalty miss for Newcastle. The two played together for Everton but have since moved on.

Upon his return to Goodison Park, Gordon was not given a warm welcome as he lined up for Newcastle. Fans were not happy with the way he left Everton in January 2023, when he completed a £45 million move to St James’ Park.

After struggling to make an impact in his first few months with the club, Gordon has now become a key player for Eddie Howe’s side. His performances at the end of last season saw him named in the England squad for the European championships.

Gordon scored a crucial goal from the penalty spot in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City last week. He had the chance to make it two goals in two from the spot when VAR awarded the Magpies another spot kick vs Everton on Saturday.

But, much to the delight of the home fans, he saw his penalty saved by England teammate Jordan Pickford. That proved to be a crucial moment in the match, with the game ending in a goalless draw.

Gordon has since taken to Instagram to send a message over his penalty miss. “A great performance, just couldn’t put them away, and that’s on me,” he wrote.

“Never easy missing but you’ll never ever see me shy away from stepping up for my team. Thanks to everyone that travelled – till (sic) next time.” Among the replies was Onana, who simply posted a red heart emoji.

The show of support comes after Everton were criticised for a social media post of their own. The official social media account has responded to a fan with a video of Gordon’s penalty miss and have added in the buzzer sound known from TV show Family Fortunes.

Jamie Carragher and former Everton medical director Dan Donachie were among those to show their disapproval. The latter labelled the post as "disgraceful".
