Wolves slipped to yet another defeat in the Premier League on Saturday, losing 5-3 to Brentford – and comments made earlier this year by Jeff Shi do not make for good reading.

Wanderers lost for the sixth time this term down at the Gtech Community Stadium, putting in a shocking defensive display.

Wolves were all at sea at the back, with Gary O’Neil describing it as his worst game in management.

Some fans had been wondering if the board could perhaps sack O’Neil following yesterday’s awful display.

But it was reported earlier today that the Englishman still retains the faith of the board for now.

Many fans are very unhappy at the moment. A lot have turned on O’Neil after yesterday’s performance and result, but some have also taken aim at those at the top.

Perhaps the current situation was always on the cards though.

For a lot of people, O’Neil is only partly to blame for the current failings of the team.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

The manager has made many questionable decisions this season, and many have run out of patience with him.

But several people believe that he has also not been supported enough by his superiors.

There was a level of investment in the summer, but Max Kilman was not replaced and Pedro Neto also wasn’t adequately replaced.

Those two were sold for just over £90 million, and only around £60 million was spent (Jorgen Strand Larsen and Carlos Forbs future fees not included).

Wolves did not have financial issues in the summer, but still spent less than they brought in from sales.

Ultimately, Fosun left O’Neil short and now we are seeing Wolves really struggling.

Chairman Jeff Shi spoke about Wolves back in May and his comments perhaps explain why Wolves are currently in the predicament they are.

He wrote in his quarterly column (via Shropshire Star): “Fans also play an important role. If you only pursue trophies or consistent European football, Wolves might not be an ideal choice.”

Fosun have neglected Wolves

Fosun did brilliant work in their first few years owning Wolves.

But in recent times, they have not provided appropriate support and investement.

There has been a recurring theme of managers stating that they do not have big enough squad, or having the right players.

When more than one manager makes that claim, you have to look at the ownership.

Many are now feeling that Fosun do not care about Wolves, and that their sole objective is to have the club merely existing in the Premier League and being self-sustaining. Stan Collymore sent a warning to the owners after gauging opinion after the Brentford shambles.

There is a clear lack of ambition, summed up by Shi’s message earlier this year.

‘If you only pursue trophies or consistent European football, Wolves might not be an ideal choice’, is a terrible thing to hear as a fan, and this attitude from Shi is one reason the club is where it is right now.
