Anthony Gordon wasn’t exactly given a warm welcome as he made his return to Everton on Saturday.
The England international was back at Goodison Park as his Newcastle side was held to a goalless draw, and he had a night to forget in front of his former fans. Gordon saw his first-half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford in what turned out to be a game-defining moment.
It was Gordon’s first time back on Merseyside following a summer in which it looked like the former Everton star could be heading to the Toffees’ fiercest rivals. The 23-year-old came close to joining Liverpool, with a deal said to have been close to completion as Newcastle looked for ways to beat the PSR deadline.
Joe Gomez was even in the running to move in the opposite direction at one point, with Gordon having reportedly told his England teammates he was heading to Anfield during their Euro 2024 camp. Ultimately though, the transfer never happened.
Newcastle is now said to be looking to tie Gordon down to a new contract at St James’ Park – Everton fans have not forgotten what went down in the summer though.
The winger had already incurred the wrath of his former club’s supporters after he forced through his move to Newcastle back in January 2023. He hasn't improved his relationship with them since then, having made no secret of his support for Liverpool, even before a transfer to Anfield became a possibility.
Everton fans made their feelings toward Gordon perfectly clear at Goodison on Saturday, with ChronicleLive reporting that chants of ‘red and white *****’ could be heard echoing around the stadium after his first few touches.
The night got even worse for Gordon when he missed the chance to put Newcastle ahead from the spot, although Magpies boss Eddie Howe offered his support after the game.
"I thought he did really well [in general," Howe told Sky Sports when asked about Gordon. "The disappointing thing for him and us will be the penalty. He has his process, it has been brilliant for him, it is one of those moments - a long wait for him to think about it and it is never easy. His overall performance was very good.”
Liverpool.com says: A real night to forget for Gordon. Having seen the stick he got from Everton fans on Saturday, just imagine what the reception would have been had he completed the move to Liverpool.
