Wolves fell to a sixth defeat from seven games of this Premier League season, this time to the hands of Brentford, who put five past the travelling pack.
Goals from Nathan Collins, Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard, Ethan Pinnock and Fabio Carvalho gave the Bees a resounding victory.
In a crazy first-half showing, the home side went 1-0 up before Matheus Cunha pulled his side level, before a repeat through Mbeumo and Jorgen Strand Larsen down the other end took the game to 2-2 after just 25 minutes.
Then Norgaard and Pinnock put two more past Sam Johnstone to send the home side 4-2 up going into the break.
Late goals from Carvalho and Rayan Ait-Nouri concluded the scoring, leaving nothing but a sour taste in the mouths of Wolves fans who could potentially be fed up with their team’s start to the season.
After the five conceded at the Gtech Arena, it takes the Premier League season tally to 21 after seven games - an average of three goals conceded per game.
Fixtures were unkind to Gary O’Neil to start the season and the trip to Brentford felt like it could prove to be a turning point of the season - that it was not.
Player Ratings
Sam Johnstone - 6
A goalkeeper conceding five goals and receiving a six should be unheard of and, while it is generous, without Johnstone in net it could have been double figures - seriously.
The Wolves goalkeeper made seven saves which helped keep the scoring down to just five.
Nelson Semedo - 6
It was a shaky performance from the right-back despite keeping Keane Lewis-Potter quiet for most of the game.
Semedo also picked up an assist for the first goal as he set up Matheus Cunha from the right flank, that counts towards a six rating.
Craig Dawson - 5
The veteran struggled to play against the speed of Kevin Schade who was let through on goal twice in the game.
He showed some glimpses of his usual self as he won 100% of his aerial duels, as well as recording a 100% tackle success rate. However, it was not enough to warrant above a five.
Toti - 5
Similar to Dawson, Toti struggled against Brentford’s frontline and in result was part of the defence to unacceptably concede five.
Toti did win four of his aerial duels - the most of any Wolves player - however, set-pieces in the game left Wolves looking vulnerable and Toti has to contribute more to defending his goal.
Rayan Ait-Nouri - 7
The left-back grabbed an assist for the second goal as he put in a low cross for Larsen’s goal, and he also scored a consolation goal late on, droving through the Brentford penalty area to strike the ball under Mark Flekken.
He recorded four key passes for Wolves - the most in the team - and did also keep Bryan Mbeumo relatively quiet despite his goal from the penalty spot.
Andre - 5
The midfielder was taken off at the hour mark, which was met by jeers from the travelling support, despite his under-par performance.
Andre continued his high pass succession rate with 92% - the team high. However, he was unable to protect the defence in this game like he had shown in previous games.
Joao Gomes - 5
Similar to his Brazilian counterpart, Gomes also dropped to a below par performance and grew frustrated with his and the team’s performance.
He was unable to break up the play as usual and lacked the bite he usually provides in the centre of the pitch.
Mario Lemina - 5
The five for Lemina completes the midfield trio of fives across the board in what was a mere mask of what the captain usually shows.
He was arguably at fault for the second goal but that is up for debate.
Carlos Forbs - 6
The winger was lively in the first half as he took Kristoffer Ajer on one-on-one on different occasions, in the end getting the better of him in the first half.
The Portuguese was replaced early in the second half and failed to trouble the Brentford defence in the second half.
Matheus Cunha - 6
Cunha got on the scoresheet but offered half of what is terrific usual self does, his impact on the game was less of the driving runs and more defensive work.
He took the most shots for Wolves with five, hitting only one of those on target.
Jorgen Strand Larsen - 6
The striker scored and offered a body up front to hold the ball up which the Norwegian did well until the final 30 minutes.
Once the team had changed shape after substitutes, the striker lost his touch and when it mattered to get back into the game at 4-2 down, he failed to provide much impact.
Substitues
Hwang Hee-Chan - 5
The forward failed to impact the game with half an hour on the pitch, a familiar story this season.
Goncalo Guedes - 6
Similar to Hwang, Guedes failed to change the game after he came on but just in less available time.
Jean Ricner Bellegarde - 6
The substitute provided the assist for the late Ait-Nouri goal but nothing else.
