Liverpool have seen a number of changeovers in the dugout and in the boardroom, and one lawyer has backed FSG to make a significant move itself.

Liverpool have experienced the biggest turnover of staff for some years this summer, with both dugout and board members vacating seats.

One of those moving into a new role is a familiar face in Michael Edwards, who previously enjoyed a successful stint as sporting director. However, he returns as Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of Football in a position that indicates the intentions of Liverpool owners.

FSG is exploring opportunities to take over another club, having been in talks with Bordeaux as recently as this month. Talks were ended by the American firm but plans to expand its portfolio are very much still active.

FSG backed more more takeover talks

Stefan Borson, the former legal advisor to Manchester City, believes FSG will inevitably look at investing in another club before long. Bordeaux have been relegated to the French third tier due administrative reasons after discussions with FSG fell through.

“I don’t know the reason why that deal in particular collapsed,” Borson told Football Insider. "It could well have been a valuation issue.

"If it is, then it could well come back again. But I don’t think this will derail Liverpool’s strategic intention. I think they will just look at other options.”

For the sake of clarity, while Liverpool would clearly be impacted by FSG investment into another entity, it is not the club itself looking to invest but their owners.

Alisson asked departed coach to stay

Former goalkeeper coach John Achterberg has revealed that Alisson urged him to think through his exit from Liverpool in tandem with Jurgen Klopp. The shot-stopper had actually asked his senior to stay at Anfield but an offer from Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq had already arrived.

Speaking on The Football Historian Podcast, the Dutchman explained: “ wanted me to stay, he wanted to keep the whole department. The first day went out was a shock for everyone, and Ali said ‘yeah John, but I don’t want to change anything, I want to keep everything’,”

“‘I understand’, I said, but when this happened, my contract was finished at the end of the season and I didn’t want to gamble on it, if you like, and hope and see what would happen. I told Ali, ‘yeah I have the chance to do this new job’.

“Ali asked me to really wait with it, if I could, because he wanted to keep me. But I had the family in the house pretty early with the offer, we talked, obviously I’m joining Stevie, and I said ‘I like the idea as well, to do that’.

“He asked me to help make a goalkeeper department and try to improve the goalies. It’s a good adventure, to try creating Saudi goalies.”
