Anthony Gordon’s final visit to Goodison Park as a Newcastle United player did not quite go to plan.
The Everton academy graduate returned to Merseyside and was started up front by Eddie Howe with Alexander Isak still out injured.
However, Newcastle were wasteful on the day and were unable to get out of second gear as they drew 0-0 with the Toffees.
The Magpies still find themselves sixth in the Premier League table after seven games, with their only defeat so far coming against Fulham.
However, Newcastle head into the international break without a win in their last three games. The Premier League campaign resumes on October 19 against Brighton.

Anthony Gordon performance vs Everton
Anthony Gordon starred when played up front against Manchester City, and he also made a lively impact off the bench in the sleepy 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon midweek.
Gordon was Newcastle’s most dangerous player against Everton, but he ended up missing the best chance of the game from the penalty spot.

Just after the 30-minute mark, Newcastle were awarded a penalty when Sandro Tonali was dragged to the ground by James Tarkowski.
With Newcastle’s usual penalty takers not on the pitch, Gordon stepped up – just as he did against City – but his effort was saved by England teammate Jordan Pickford.
The 23-year-old was made to wait an awfully long time before taking the spot-kick, and while his effort was on target, Pickford was unfortunately equal to it.
What Jordan Pickford said to Anthony Gordon after penalty save
The script couldn’t have gone any worse for Newcastle fans. On his return to Merseyside, Gordon’s penalty as a Newcastle United player was saved by a Sunderland fan.
Both players were pictured talking to each other afterwards and Pickford has now revealed what he and Gordon said.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game , Pickford said: “He just asked me why did I go that way.
“I just said you went both right the last time, so I fancied you go to the left.”
Gordon is now set to meet up with Pickford over the international break after being called up – with Nick Pope – to Lee Carsley’s England side.
