Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has insisted that Anthony Gordon remains fully committed to the Magpies amid links with Liverpool. But speculation over Howe's own future at St James' Park will make it harder to believe him.
Gordon has been linked with a move to Anfield all summer with Newcastle said to have been open to selling some of their star players to keep in line with the league's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The June 30 PSR deadline for Premier League clubs has since passed but that has not stopped some of the speculation around Gordon's future.
The former Everton forward is a boyhood Liverpool fan and had a short stint at the Reds' academy before turning professional. Magpies boss Howe though has insisted that the 23-year-old is going nowhere.

“We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative," he told reporters. "He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle and I want to make that clear to all our supporters.
“Anthony needs a bit of a break but by the time he comes back, he’ll be ready to go. He’s such an important player for us. We didn’t want to lose anybody. Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions but in those last few weeks it was very, very difficult.
Howe's words come amid reports that he is being considered as Gareth Southgate's successor for the England national team job. The 46-year-old has reiterated his desire to stay at the North East club, but speculation will continue until he either signs a new deal at St James' Park or an alternative candidate for the England job is appointed.
And his previous comments when asked if he would be in charge of Newcastle at the start of next season show that his future at Newcastle remains uncertain.
“As long as I feel supported by the football club and free to work in the way that I want to work, that’s the crucial thing,” he said in a hint that he could consider his future if the club's revamped hierarchy, after the departure of former co-owner Amanda Staveley, don't offer him the support he wants.
It means that the Magpies may be faced with two major decisions this summer. Newcastle could be looking for a new manager if Howe leaves and they may also need a replacement for Gordon if Liverpool pounce.
The future of both remains uncertain and the Reds could end up benefiting before the summer transfer window closes on August 30.
