Everton boss Sean Dyche could not contain his frustration after the decision not to award his side a penalty in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle United.
The Magpies saw their own first-half spot-kick saved as Jordan Pickford kept Anthony Gordon out from 12 yards and the second-half saw Everton launch their own appeals as Dominic Calvert-Lewin clashed with Dan Burn. The Toffees forward had got a shot away, saved by Nick Pope, before hitting the deck under contact when going for the rebound.
It looked, in real time, as though Everton were right to feel aggrieved but replays clearly show Calvert-Lewin kicks the back of Burn's leg as he swings to take a second crack at goal. That, however, did not stop Dyche venting his frustrations on the matter at full-time.
“Ours, the thing I can’t work out, I see so many weak penalties and then you see that," he told reporters after the 0-0 draw. "He’s clearly tried to swipe the ball at goal. Their lad , I don’t think he can even reach it and interrupts him striking at goal - let’s say he’s going to score.
"They don’t even look at it. At least have a look at it. Our record is awful for penalties, you know we don’t get them. If that’s in middle of pitch, everyone thinks in the stadium thinks it’s a foul so why isn’t it? Whenever we ask the question, we go to powers that be and they’ll give some technical reason.
“It’s like when you tap someone on the shoulder and their legs buckle. We can’t get penalties so who knows?”
Despite Dyche's claims, the Video Assistant Referee at Stockley Park did take a look at the incident, with Chris Kavanagh, the official on duty, telling referee Craig Pawson to stick with his on-field decision of no penalty.

The Premier League confirmed this via their newly-launched 'Match Centre', posting on X: “The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge between Calvert-Lewin and Burn is checked and confirmed by VAR - deeming that Calvert-Lewin kicked the back of Burn’s leg.”
Discussing the incident at full-time, Eddie Howe added: "I haven’t seen Everton’s shout again but I thought Dan stood his ground. Naturally, I’d side our way."
