Jamie Carragher reacts to Everton v Newcastle United

Sat 5 October 2024 19:27, UK
Jamie Carragher has never heard fans react to a penalty miss like Everton fans did as Anthony Gordon fluffed his lines for Newcastle United in a 0-0 draw.
James Tarkowski gave away a spot kick which gave the former Toffees forward a chance to open the scoring from 12 yards.
England international Jordan Pickford was able to keep the Magpies man out with a save that sent the Goodison faithful crazy.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (5 October, 6:05pm), Carragher was in awe of how loud supporters were after the save.
He said: “I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a reaction like that in a football stadium to a penalty miss like this. It’s like they’ve scored a last-minute winner.
“I think we all know why the reaction is like that – their former player Anthony Gordon .”

It is safe to say that the former Goodison favourite isn’t well-liked on the terraces anymore after comments he has made since leaving.
As a result, it is no surprise that he was met with a hostile response from supporters every time he touched the ball on Saturday (5 October).
When Tarkowski threw his man to the ground in the penalty area and a spot kick was given, the 23-year-old was presented with the chance to silence the home fans.
If anything, he only made them louder with the miss as Pickford scampered across his goal to make an improvised save with his knees.

Chants of “England’s Number One” echoed around Goodison, which was about as loud as it has been all season in the aftermath of his save.
In the end, this proved to be a telling moment as the goalkeeper helped the home side to secure a point in a game they otherwise may have lost.
