Manchester United cannot appeal the red card issued to Bruno Fernandes during their chaotic 3-3 draw against Porto on Thursday. The 30-year-old, who was booked in the first half, was sent off in the 81st minute after receiving his second yellow card for a high boot on defender Nehuen Perez.

As his sending off came in the Europa League and wasn't deemed as a 'serious offence', Fernandes will be available for United's Premier League trip to Aston Villa on Sunday and will instead serve a one-match suspension in their next UEFA club competition match. It means the Portuguese will be unavailable for the game against Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce later this month.

Fernandes was also shown his marching orders during the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday. However, United appealed the decision and won it after the FA confirmed that the red card had been cancelled. A statement read: "Bruno Fernandes will be available for Man Utd's next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal. The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Tottenham."

There have been some questions over whether United can - like his sending off against Tottenham - appeal Fernandes' dismissal following the draw with Porto. However, as he was given two yellow cards rather than a straight red card, United cannot appeal the decision and his one-match ban will stand regardless of whether it's deemed as harsh.

Despite going down to 10 men with nine minutes left on the clock, United managed to salvage a late draw thanks to Harry Maguire's stoppage-time header.

United got off to the perfect start at Estadio do Dragao, easing into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund. However, they surrendered that advantage, with Porto turning the game on its head with Pepe Aquino pulling one back before Samu Omorodion scored a brace to put them ahead.

It all seemed to be unravelling when Fernandes was sent off in the 81st minute, but Maguire saved the day with a last-gasp equaliser. "We started the game very good, we dominated, scored two good goals, but then we lost control," Ten Hag said after the game.

"So the start was good, the middle part was not good, and then we finished very good. It's a tough place to go, so coming back from 3-2 we get the equaliser, which is good for the spirit. You see again that the team has a really strong character, but the middle part, the defending, we have to improve."
