Adam Wharton is being seen as someone who ticks a lot of boxes for Man City as a potential Rodri replacement, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Crystal Palace midfielder is a name that “keeps cropping up” at the Etihad Stadium and is an “interesting” potential capture.

The 20-year-old is seen as someone who will only continue to get better with more exposure and experience in the Premier League.

The England international would also count as a homegrown player, which is another benefit for the defending Premier League champions.

Wharton had a breakthrough campaign during the 2023-24 season which saw him make the England team for Euro 2024.

The central midfielder is ever present in the Palace team, having played in every Premier League match this season.

Man City won’t rush into replacing Rodri

Even though Man City would like to bolster their midfield options due to Rodri’s long-term knee injury, sources tell Football Insider that the club will not panic.

Pep Guardiola’s side are currently doing their homework on a number of targets who could potentially fill the gap and provide cover for the Spain international.

Football Insider revealed that the club are working on a “big name signing” for the January transfer window to enhance the squad.

Man City have failed to win their previous two Premier League games, drawing against Newcastle and Arsenal.

Guardiola’s side will be back in action on Saturday (5 October) against Fulham.
