There has been speculation regarding the future of Wolves ace Daniel Podence, as the winger is not travelling with the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.

Gary O’Neil has been granted the opportunity to fully assess his Wolves squad this summer after arriving days before the 2023/24 season started.

The manager was denied the chance to gel with his players prior to last campaign, making pre-season a crucial time for the boss this year.

While Wolves’ focus is currently on their pre-season tour of the United States, there are some rumours to clear up, particularly those regarding Daniel Podence.

Daniel Podence will miss Wolves pre-season tour of the United States due to injury amid Olympiacos transfer links

The future of Podence has been speculated for some time after the winger left Wolves last summer to join his former club Olympiacos on loan.

After excelling in Greece, where he won the Europa Conference League, the 28-year-old procedurally returned to Wolves, where he has since impressed in pre-season.

On Tuesday, journalist Konstantinos Lianos reported that Podence would not travel with Wolves on their pre-season tour of the United States as he ‘wants to rejoin’ Olympiacos.

Lianos’ theory was then counteracted by Wolves expert Liam Keen, who took to X to explain that the Portuguese ace would not travel due to him nursing an injury.

That being said, Lianos’ report is also not incorrect, as Keen emphasised that it’s ‘still likely’ that Podence will leave Wolves this summer however, the reason for his pre-season omission is due to a calf strain.

The winger, who is contracted to Molineux until 2025, will be away from the action with O’Neil’s side this summer, which is encouraging news for Olympiacos in their bid to lure him back to Greece.

Podence situation is a shame despite Wolves exit being expected

While Podence became a thing of the past after leaving on loan last term, his performances became hard for those at Molineux to filter out.

In 47 appearances in all competitions, the 28-year-old contributed to a monstrous 28 goals over the 2023/24 campaign, hinting at what he could offer to O’Neil if he was to somehow revive his career at Wolves.

There was a hint that there could be a future in the Midlands for Podence as he impressed in the club’s pre-season training camp in Marbella, with the manager also admitting he’d like to see the wide player stay this summer.

While Podence’s exclusion from the squad comes as a result of injury, it is concerning and will cause rumours to circulate further, as an exit looks to be on the cards despite his encouraging start to pre-season under O’Neil.
