As Celtic prepare to face Manchester City in the next step of the US Summer Tour, Brendan Rodger will be looking forward to facing the English Premier League club again.
The Celtic boss has faced Man City 19 times as a manager and his record against the cash-rich club does not make good reading.
With just five wins and four draws, Rodgers has lost ten of those fixtures in total. Seven at Leicester City, two at Liverpool and once at Swansea.
Indeed, as all Celtic supporters know, Rodgers is undefeated against City after holding the Premier League side to two Champions League draws in 2016 with a thrilling 3-3 stalemate at Parkhead and a 1-1 draw at the Emirates.
But that was eight years ago now so how do both teams compare from 2016 to 2024? Let’s take a look.
Celtic 2016 squad vs Man City 2016 squad
In 2016, Rodgers had just arrived at Celtic as he was hired to bolster their domestic position and European stature.
Drawn against City in the group stages, here is what both squads looked like for those two ties:
Celtic 2016 | Manchester City 2016 |
GK: Craig Gordon | GK: Willy Cabalero |
LB: Kieran Tierney | LB: Gael Clichy |
CB: Erik Sviatchenko | CB: Alexsander Kolarov |
CB: Kolo Toure | CB: Nicolas Otamendi |

DM: Scott Brown | DM: Fernandinho |
DM: Nir Bitton | AM: İlkay Gündoğan |
LW: James Forrest | AM: David Silva |
AM: Tom Rogic | LW: Nolito |
RW: Scott Sinclair | RW: Rahim Sterling |

MORE CELTIC STORIES
It’s hard to imagine that Callum McGregor and Patrick Roberts started both those games on the bench and the amount of quality City had on theirs is just frightening.
Celtic deserves a lot of credit for pulling off both of those Champions League results and Rodgers will be hoping to match or better that in the friendly in the small hours of tonight.
Celtic 2024 squad vs Man City 2024 for US Summer Tour
It’s fair to say that Pep Guardiola has a plethora of stars to choose from for the game against Celtic but Brendan Rodgers has his own talented group of players who can cause them problems.
So lets take a look at what both teams have:
Celtic 2024 | Manchester City 2024 |
GK: Kasper Schmeichel Viljami Sinisalo Tobi Oluwayemi Josh Clarke | GK: Ederson Scott Carson Moreno |
DEF: Anthony Ralston Greg Taylor Gustaf Lagerbielke Cameron Carter-Vickers Liam Scales Bosun Lawal Dane Murray Matthew Anderson Yuki Kobayashi Colby Donovan Stephen Welsh | DEF: Stefan Ortega Rico Lewis Jahmai Simpson-Pusey Jadel Katongo Tom Galvez Luke Mbete Callum Doyle Stephen Mfuni Lakyle Samuel Josh Wilson-Esbrand |
MF: Callum McGregor (c) Matt O’Riley Reo Hatate Odin Thiago Holm Tomoki Iwata Hyeokkyu Kwon Ben Summers Francis Turley Jude Bonnar | MF: Maximo Perrone James McAtee Kalvin Phillips Jacob Wright Nico O’Reilly Mahamadou Susoho Micah Hamilton |
FW: Kyogo Furuhashi Nicolas Kuhn Luis Palma Daizen Maeda James Forrest Josh Dede Hyunjun Yang Mikey Johnston | FW: Jack Grealish Erling Haaland Oscar Bobb Joel Ndala Justin Oboavwoduo Jaden Heskey Amar Fatah Ben Knight |
So it is fair to say that whilst both squads look entirely different from what they will at the beginning of the new season, there are still some big names in there to make tonight’s game an interesting affair.
For Celtic, Rodgers will want to test his side’s mettle against the likes of Haaland and Grealish and it will be a decent marker to see how the squad stands ahead of the Champions League for next season.
