Vincent Kompany responded when asked about comparisons between him and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

The former Etihad skipper faced the media yesterday, as he bids to prepare his players for the new season.

Bayern are looking to respond after a poor 2023/24 campaign that saw them finish trophyless.

Bayern ended up coming third in the Bundesliga, with Bayer Leverkusen winning the title and Stuttgart finishing second. The club also lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final.

After sacking Thomas Tuchel, Bayern have turned to Vincent Kompany, which is a move that surprised a lot of people given he oversaw Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League.

Kompany held a press conference on Monday, and was actually asked about comparisons between him and his former manager Pep Guardiola.

It was a tough 2023/24 season for Kompany.

He did amazing work getting Burnley promoted into the Premier League, playing some wonderful football in the Championship.

But Kompany’s style did not really translate to the Premier League, and the Clarets rather went down with a whimper in the end.

He will hope to fare much better at Bayern, and City fans will hope to see the former Etihad skipper do well.

When asked about comparisons between him and Pep, Kompany said (via Bayern Munich official YouTube): “He is one of the most, if not the most special coach of this generation.

“People like him always influence others. I know this question will always come back and I have an immense amount of respect for him, but for me, the main thing is to speak about my football ideas.

“I match my ideas with my personality. You learn a lot from the coaches you have had – but also from other experiences. Of course, Pep Guardiola had a big influence on me. But it’s important to go your own way.”

Kompany was also asked about City target Joshua Kimmich at his press conference, but he would not really be drawn on his future.

Pep is incomparable

Lots of managers these days try and replicate things Pep has done, or take and modify ideas from the Spaniard.

His influence on the game is undeniable, and so many are now looking to use Pep as an inspiration.

But there is simply no one as good as him. £378,000-a-week manager Pep has achieved remarkable things at City and has constantly reinvented – and his haul of trophies shows how successful he has been.

It is going to be interesting to see how Kompany gets on at Bayern. Some do feel he is a tad fortunate to have landed that job given Burnley’s relegation.

But he’ll now have some world-class players to work with, and given how intelligent he is there is every chance he can push Leverkusen and win back the title.
