Sean Longstaff has just one year left remaining on his Newcastle United contract
Newcastle United could cash in on Sean Longstaff amid reported interest from Leicester City, according to reports.
The North Shields native has been one of Eddie Howe’s trusted lieutenants since his appointment almost three years ago. By his admission, Longstaff suffered confidence issues under Steve Bruce but has gone on to feature in 102 of Howe’s 125 games as manager.
Last season saw the 26-year-old attract criticism despite bagging eight goals - high best-ever figures for Newcastle. The Magpies relied heavily upon Longstaff due to Joe Willock, Joelinton, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali being sidelined for most of the season.
The midfielder - pictured playing cricket for Tynemouth during the summer break - opened up about the stick he received following the win over Burnley in May. He also hailed his “special” relationship with Toon boss Howe.
“Sometimes you can get caught up in everything that's going on outside,” Longstaff said. “What people are saying, I can’t control that. Ultimately, all I can do is play football and, whatever people say, people say. It is what it is.

“He (Howe) believes in me and I really appreciate it. He and his staff have been great with me since they walked in the door. He’s a special person.”
The Telegraph now claim Longstaff may be sold given his precarious contract situation. As it stands, he has one year remaining on a deal penned in May 2022.
Leicester and Leeds United have both been linked with potential approaches in recent months. Should the Magpies fail to agree a contract extension, the report suggests they will be reluctantly open to offers, similar to how Anderson and Yankuba Minteh moved on for a combined £68million last month.
