Everton plan to convince defender Jarrad Branthwaite to stay at the club by offering him a significantpay rise, according to The Telegraph.

The report (22 July) suggests that the Englishman will be handed a big salary increase if he commits to staying at Goodison Park. They also hope that their “show of intent” will calm the fears of those who worry they’ll have to offload more big names due to financial difficulties.

The news comes amid rumblings that Manchester United are ready to admit defeat in their pursuit of Branthwaite (Irish Independent, 21 July).

Everton stick to their guns

Even after the failed takeover attempt from The Friedkin Group, Everton seem to be approaching the summer transfer window with an “everything is fine” mentality. While Amadou Onana has completed his move to Aston Villa, the Toffees are adamant that Branthwaite is still a big part of their plans moving forward.

The report notes that Erik ten Hag wants to revive United’s interest, but it says a lot that the Red Devils refused to meet Everton’s valuation of £70million. He proved to the masses last season that he belongs at the elite level and after not being selected for England’s UEFA Euro 2024 squad, he clearly has a point to prove.

Just take last season as an example of what he can do. Everton finished 15th in the Premier League but when it came to goals conceded, they had the fourth-best record out of all 20 teams (PremierLeague.com). It didn’t all come from Branthwaite, but he played a huge role.

In other Everton news, a player Pep Guardiola called “exceptional” last season is now the leading transfer target for the Toffees.
